Medical Academy of Crimea Federal University

Already for 45 years, foreign citizens have been studying at the Medical Academy of Crimea Federal University. In 1961 six students from Greece came to us, in 1962 there were 22 students from Iraq, Sudan, Yemen. From then on with every coming year, a contingent of students has been increasing, and also a number of countries, citizens of which have been studying at Crimean State Medical Academy.

For these years more than 2.5 thousand of specialists have been trained for health services of more than 100 countries.

In 1966 a dean’s office was organised to work with foreign students. Foreign students are trained in “General Medicine”, ”Stomatology” specialties.
In 1993 the International Medical Faculty was organized. Since 1999 the Academy has been developing a new form of education. It’s teaching students in English. Annually professional English mastering is being tested. Now already 400 lecturers of Academy teach students in English. Educational materials, manuals, textbooks are done both in printed and electronic variants for English speaking students.
Foreign students take part in the work of the students’ learned society Annual International students’ conferences in English devoted to the actual problems of public health of different countries became a tradition.
Nowadays around 1.4 thousand students from 47 countries study at the Medical Academy. Only this year around 400 foreign students entered the Academy. Medical Academy is the leader among the institutions of higher learning in the number of foreign students and the quality of education.
To get higher professional qualification specialists are trained at the faculty of post-diploma education: post-graduate courses and clinical ordinature. To write a dissertation foreign students are given themes connected with the peculiarities of public health of their countries.

Students are taught according to the curriculum and programs by the Ministry of Health of Russia. In the first and second years, students study humanitarian and fundamental subjects, which are the basis for medical knowledge acquired during the following years.

Students’ clinical knowledge – diagnostics and treatment of patients, practical skills – is of particular significance. Beginning from the third year and till graduation from the University at practical classes and during summer practical training, students work with patients, master and use modern methods of diagnostics and treatment. An important form of check-up of students’ knowledge is a testing frame, elaborated and introduced at the University, with a set of tests to meet the requirements of licensing examinations KROK-1 and KROK-2 in medicine. The indices of the academic progress of the faculty graduates have averaged 70% during the last years.

At the faculty where about 700 students are taught, there are all the necessary conditions for successful training and researches. Clinical departments of the faculty are situated on the base of large medical institutions of Simferopol, equipped with modern diagnostic facilities. Every department of the faculty is a scientific collective, which gets the most talented students, members of students’ scientific societies to take part in scientific investigations. That is why future research workers master special skills already when students and annual students’ scientific conferences take place in overcrowded lecture halls.

Modern computer technologies are widely used in instruction, students having the possibility to examine patients in computer x-ray rooms, to study functional and anatomical changes of different organs in different diseases with help of ?-cameras under the guidance of teachers. Students may use ultrasonography, powerful sources of radiation for radiotherapy of malignant tumors, endoscopic and endosurgical equipment, etc.

The staff of the Crimea Federal university consists of about 700 teachers (c. 100 doctors of sciences and c. 350 candidates of sciences). 39 professors of the University are academicians and corresponding members of domestic and foreign Academies.

Campuses and Hostel buildings

The territory of the Crimea Federal University (without the clinical bases) occupies 17.3 hectares. It has 16 educational buildings, five hostels, covered track and field athletics arena, sports center (with the stadium and swimming pool), several cafes. The library fund of the university is about 600,000 books. Crimea Medical University has also its own publishing center.
