Gomel State Medical University ( GomSMU ) is a state higher educational institution located in the city of Gomel, Republic of Belarus. The university trains specialists in the medical and diagnostic profile, surgeons, pediatricians, therapists, obstetricians, sleep physiologists, and resuscitators, the main specialty of the graduates of the faculty is general medicine.

Gomel State Medical University is subordinate to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. During the existence of the university, a highly professional team has been created, capable of training medical personnel at the proper level, conducting scientific research, and providing medical advice to the population.

In 2003, the Gomel State Medical University was accredited in the Republic of Belarus for compliance with the type of university. The university is accredited in all specialties of personnel training with higher education. In 2008, the university passed state accreditation of specialties, professions, and certifications.
The clinical base is one of the best in the Republic of Belarus, where the most modern medical technologies are used for the diagnosis and treatment of endocrinological, cardiological, immunological, hematological, ophthalmological, and oncological diseases.

Gomel State Medical University has concluded and is in force agreements on cooperation with foreign educational institutions, research, and other foreign organizations. Among the main partners of the university are such foreign educational institutions as the University of Nagasaki (Japan), the University of Akita (Japan), Kursk Medical University (Russia), the University of Aberdeen (Scotland), and others. Gomel State Medical University, the ideological and educational work with youth is carried out in accordance with the main directions of the state youth policy of the Republic of Belarus and is aimed at creating a diverse, moral, creative personality of the student. Gomel State Medical University has trained about 15000 doctors in 54 medical specialties. The graduates of the University work in clinics of different cities of the Republic of Belarus, the Newly Independent States, and Western Europe.

During its existence, the medical faculty of Gomel State medical university has trained more than 2000 foreign students from 36 countries: India, Syria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, Peru, Nigeria, and others.

Medical Faculty of Gomel University

The Faculty of General Medicine is the first faculty of the Gomel State Medical University, which was opened in 1990.

The preparation of the student is carried out at 35 departments of the university in more than 100 disciplines, including additional training in optional courses.

Education at the faculty lasts for 6 years, the specialty is called “General Medicine”, qualification “doctor”.
The first two years of study, a student of the faculty comprehends natural sciences and biomedical sciences, the basics of the humanities and social disciplines. The main basic subjects for the students of the Faculty are Normal Anatomy and Histology, Cytology, and Embryology. The third year focuses on general professional disciplines.

From the third year, students of the medical faculty undergo practical training, which contributes to the consolidation, deepening, improvement, systematization of the theoretical knowledge of the student, obtained in the course of training, in order to acquire practical skills that are necessary for the future for independent professional activity.

After the third year, medical students undergo nursing practice, after the 4th year – medical polyclinic, and after the 5th year – medical clinical practice. Students take an active part in the treatment and diagnostic process, adopting the experience of their teachers.

In the sixth year, students complete their studies insubordination in two profiles of the specialty “General Medicine”: surgical (pathology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, oncology, anesthesiology and resuscitation, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery) and therapeutic (therapy, emergency medical care, psychiatry-narcology psychotherapy, pediatrics, general practice, neurology).

From the first year of study, the student gets the opportunity to attend student scientific circles of both theoretical and clinical departments of the university, to speak at meetings with reports.
